Chemistry
Name: Polymer Chemistry
Catalog Number: 411004Y Hours/Credits: 40/2
Prerequisite(s):
Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry
Course Description:
Polymer chemistry is a foundation course of graduate students of chemistry. The course involves not only chain polymerization, step polymerization and reactions of polymers, but also emphasizes the relationships of structure, property and application. The students should master factors influencing rate of polymerization, degree of polymerization, microstructure of polymer, copolymer composition and study method of control, which lays the foundation for engaging scientific research in the future.
Course Content:
Chapter 1 Introduction Basic concept of polymer chemistry; Nomenclature of polymers; Classification of polymers; Molecular weight; Microstructure of polymer; Physical state of polymer. Chapter 2 Radical chain polymerization Mechanism of free radical polymerization; Chain initiation; Rate of polymerization; Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution; Control of rate of polymerization and polymer molecular weight; Living/controlled free radical polymerization; polymerization methods. Chapter 3 Cationic polymerization Cationic polymerization of vinyl monomers; Initiation; Mechanism of cationic polymerization; Effect factors. Chapter 4 Anionic polymerization Anionic polymerization of vinyl monomers; Initiator system and initiation; Concept and feature of living polymerization; Living anionic polymerization; Group transfer polymerization; Aldol condensation-type of group transfer polymerization.
