Chemistry
Name: Colloid and Surface Chemistry
Catalog Number: 412041Y Hours/Credits: 40/2
Prerequisite(s):
Physical Chemistry; Advanced Mathematics.
Course Description:
The goal of the course is to give students more profound physical -chemical knowledge in the area of colloid and surface chemistry as well as deeper understanding of some key concepts. In addition to learning concrete knowledge, the skills useful both in industrial and academic careers will be developed, such as critical thinking, estimation, statistical analysis et al. Grades will be judged on the basis of performance on homework assignments, literature reports and final examination. The course is designed for graduate students and those who are working on or intend to work on the field related to colloid and surface chemistry.
Course Content:
The course covers extensive knowledge of colloid and surface chemistry. Fundamental theories will be established and applied. The course covers but not limited to the following contents: introduction of colloid and surface chemistry, preparation of colloid particles, diffusion properties of colloid particles, optical scattering of colloid particles, electrical double layer models and its application in electric properties of colloid particles, stability of colloid particles, gel, brief introduction of rheology, liquid surface and interface(including surface tension, Laplace formulation, Kelvin formulation et al.), solid surface and interface, surfactants, emulsion and foam et al.
