Prerequisite(s): |
Linear Algebra and General Chemistry. |
Course Description: |
Students completing this course are expected to know the basic principles of group theory and its application in chemistry, and quantum chemistry in particular. Grades will be decided on the basis of performance on homework assignments and final examination. |
Course Content: |
The course introduces fundamental principles of group theory, including symmetry elements and operations, definition of group, classes of group operations, matrices of groups, representations of groups, character tables, irreducible representation, group theory application in chemistry (e.g. wavefunctions as bases of irreducible representations, molecular spectroscopy et al.), direct product and its application in quantum mechanics et al. |
