This division contains two majors: Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology. As one main major of chemistry in the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS), Organic Chemistry major was established starting at the same time in 1978 with the coming of GUCAS, in 2007 this college was appointed to grant master's and doctor's degrees to students in Chemical Biology. The related education for graduates and researches in organic chemistry and chemical biology were also developed gradually since that. Many full-time faculties already won some awards such as the second class Educational Achievement Award of CAS, excellent courses Awards of GUCS. All the above offered a good environment for the graduates training in the fields of organic chemistry and chemical biology.

This division has four members, they cooperate frequently with many famous academic institutions, universities, especially the academic Institutes of CAS. In recent years, this team already trained about 15 Ph.D. candidates and nearly 10 graduate students got their degrees, and currently more than 20 graduates are enrolled in doctoral and master programs.

Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology team in recent years has assumed more 20 research projects such as the Major National Basic Research Projects (973), National High Technology Development Projects (863), the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), the Scientific Research Foundation of the State for the returned Overseas scholars, the President Fund of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lee Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement of USA, more than 10 million RMB yuan research funding was supported in these projects.

More than 100 research papers were published on the following journals such as on J.Am.Chem.Soc., Proc. Natl.Acad.Sci.USA, Nucleic Acids Research, Carbohydr. Res., Chem.Commun., Org.Lett., Org. Biomol. Chem., RSC Adv., J. Org. Chem., Chem. Eur. J., New J.Chem., Adv. Synth. Catal., Sensors and Actuators B: Chem., Biosensors & Bioelectronics, Chem.Mater., Tetrahedron, J.Phys.Org.Chem., Synlett., Synthesis, Tetrahedron Lett., Macromol. Rapid Commun., J. Mater. Chem., Talanta and others, also nearly 10 national invention patents were applied.

With a conventional experimental synthesis conditions and universal analysis instruments are equipped such as Fourier transform infrared( FT-IR )spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, variable temperature fluorescence spectrometer, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC),preparative chromatography, circular dichroismchromatography (CD), and other instruments, also combined with the other Institutes of CAS to share all kinds of large and medium-sized equipments, we ensure a good research environment and atmosphere plus adequate equipments for scientific research and education for the graduates in the fields of organic chemistry and chemical biology.

Combined with the interdisciplinary characteristics of the Graduate University of CAS, focus on the efficient/green synthesis methods for new compounds, the developments in the fields of medicine, energy, materials, environmental and life sciences. In recent years the research team has made the following representative achievements in their unique natures:

1) Study on the synthesis of a series of polarity multi-conjugated organic system, and their performance and cyclization reaction; synthesized a series of S, N ring and miscellaneous spiro compounds with potential multi-functional performance;

2) Study found that the combination effects of reagents such two different inorganic salts and organic oxidizing or reducing agent plays a very important role on the chemical reaction catalyzation or stereochemistry controlling

3) First synthesized the optically pure furan-like 1,2-anhydro-sugar; found a new method for the synthesis of sugar keto C-glycosides, developed the"one-pot multistep methods” used for synthesis of different 3,6- branched active oligosaccharide core; first time reported the successful application of the partially protected glycosyl donor in the glycosylation reaction of natural saponins, and synthesized a series bioactive- potentially oligosaccharide and oligosaccharide conjugates.

4) Visual inspection of Melamine based on the special Au-NPs sensor, melamine detection by nucleotides modified gold electrodes.

5) By using chiral metal complexes selectively induced the achiral cyanine dye molecules to form the chiral supramolecular aggregates and the chiral memory effects of aggregates;

6). Experiment displayed the relationship between the specific dynamic environmental conditions and chemical reaction or radioisotopes uniqueness.

7) Special conjugated molecular system were synthesized to detect the toxic heavy metals ( Pb2+,Hg2+ ) and the F- ions in highly sensitivity by take advantage of the fluorescent chemical sensing performance.

Main research interests for the members (Professor DU, Yu-Guo; YANG, Jing-Kui; HE, Yu-Jian; and an associate professor LU, Hai-Yan) are: organic synthesis and organic structural informatics, sugar chemistry, self-assembly of chiral molecular, drug synthesis and functional characterization, organic synthesis and functional materials, with the following specific researches:

1) Drug design and synthesis based on the carbohydrate chemistry and Drug sugar chemistry and heterocyclic compounds;

2) Structure-activity relationship studies for the natural bioactive products and their derivatives based on the synthetic organic chemistry;

3) Assembly and synthesis of chiral molecular materials;

4) Synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials and devices;

5) Physical organic chemistry and organic catalysis, asymmetric synthesis;

6) Macrocyclic supramolecular synthesis and host-guest chemistry;

7) Properties and effects of peptide nucleic acids and DNA in different biological systems / environments.

8) The origin and induction for the molecular chirality;

9) Synthesis of molecular probes, and the application of their recognition or self-assembly effects on the disease diagnosis or the protection of food safety;

10) Isotope labeling chemistry;
