The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, as one of core academic colleges of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), was established in September, 2004. Its predecessor can be traced back to the Department of Chemistry of Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS). According to the overall strategic plan of CAS, the school is administrated by the Institute of Chemistry, in conjunction with the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, Institute of Process Engineering, and more than ten other institutes of CAS, including Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, etc. The school has seven divisions including Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Polymer Science and Materials, Chemical Engineering, and Chemical Experiment and Comprehension.

The goal of the school is to serve as an excellent platform for coalescence of scientific research and education. By taking the advantage of excellent research resources such as first-class researchers, advanced laboratory equipments, and high-end international cooperation and exchange, the school endeavors to offer high-quality education for personnel training and frontier scientific research training. In total, the faculty of the school is constituted of more than 700 Ph. D advisors, more than 500 M.S. supervisors, and many professional teachers directly or indirectly participating in teaching and training graduate and undergraduate students. Among these faculties, there are 50 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The off-campus platform of the school has two national laboratories (Beijing National laboratory of Molecular Sciences and Dalian National Laboratory for Clean Energy), fifteen state key laboratories (Molecular Reaction Dynamics, Structural Chemistry of Unstable and Stable Species, Polymer Physics and Chemistry, Catalysis, Rare Earth Resource Utilization, Electroanalytical Chemistry, Bio-organic and Natural Products Chemistry, Organometallics Chemistry, High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructures, Structural Chemistry, Oxo Synthesis and Selective Oxidation, Solid Lubrication, Multiphase Complex Systems, Biochemical Engineering, Coal Conversion), and four national engineering laboratories (Indirect Coal Liquefaction, Hydrometallurgical Cleaner Production Technology, and Carbon Fiber Preparation, and Methanol to Olefins)which are distributed in more than 20 institutes of CAS.

The in-campus platform of the school also established many research laboratories, including Inorganic Materials, Organic and Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Electrochemistry, Theoretical Chemistry and Molecular Simulation, Capillary Electrophoresis, Nano and Biological Surface Analysis, etc., which are equipped with modern instruments. These laboratories serve both scientific research and experimental skill training. The in-campus faculty of the school has 12 professors, 14 associate professors, and 9 management staffs. They have published more than 500 papers in important domestic and international peer-reviewed journals and many academic monographs, obtained many national patents. They have completed/or are carrying out many state projects such as "the ninth five-year plan", “the tenth five-year plan”, "key science and technology" projects, “863” and “973” projects, and projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China (including one National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars), as well as many projects from open fund of state key laboratories and enterprise-funded latitudinal projects. Presently, the school has 98 Master candidates and 37 Ph.D. candidates in the campus.
